Know the Role

Purpose: Understand what the company truly needs. 

What to review:

  • Job description (highlight the problems the role solves)
  • Top 3 must‑have skills
  • Company website, product pages, recent news, and social media posts
  • What  success for you in the first 90 days might look like

Your goal: Be able to explain how you will make an impact.

Prepare Your Core Stories (STAR+)

Method: Situation → Task → Action → Result → +Reflection

Prepare 5–7 stories that demonstrate:

  • Ownership
  • Problem‑solving
  • Leadership or influence
  • Adaptability
  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • A failure you learned from

Tip: Use measurable outcomes whenever possible.

Practice Behavioral Questions

Common prompts:

  • Tell me about a time you took initiative.
  • Describe a situation where you influenced without authority.
  • Tell me about a mistake you made and what you learned.

Focus on: How you think, decide, and communicate.

Understand the Company

 Research checklist:

  • Mission and values
  • Products or services
  • Competitors
  • Recent press releases
  • Leadership team
  • Glassdoor themes
  • Visit their location and secret shop (if role is in a retail environment)

Prepare a statement: “Here’s why I’m excited about this company and how I can contribute.”

Prepare Questions to Ask

Strong questions include:

  • Team goals and challenges
  • Success metrics for the role
  • Leadership style
  • Cross‑functional collaboration
  • First 90 days expectations
  • Why the role is open

Avoid early‑stage questions about: Salary, PTO, or benefits.

Plan Your Opening & Closing

Opening (30 seconds)

A concise summary of:

  • What you do
  • What you’re great at
  • The problems you solve
  • Why this role fits

  

Closing (20 seconds)

Reinforce:

  • Your interest
  • Your strengths
  • Your alignment with the role
  • Your curiosity about next steps

Manage Nerves & Presence

Techniques:

  • Slow breathing before the call
  • Keep water nearby
  • Pause before answering
  • Smile to improve tone
  • Remember:  They already believe you can do the job

Goal: Be clear, thoughtful, and human. 

Send a Strong Follow Up Message

  Structure:

  • Thank them
  • Reference something from the conversation
  • Reconnect your strengths to the role
  • Express excitement about next steps
  • Make each one unique if sending to multiple people

Tone: Short, specific, and genuine.

Final Interview Checklist

    

Before the interview:

  • Resume printed or open
  • Stories prepared
  • Questions ready
  • Company research complete
  • Quiet space secured
  • Water nearby
  • Confidence and energy up

Additional tips If interview is virtual:

  • Tech tested – Camera, Microphone, Zoom/Teams compatibility
